“Dr. Mary Shy Scott Tribute” 2021

Created in 2021, the Dr. Mary Shy Scott Tribute honors the extraordinary life, leadership and legacy of Dr. Mary Shy Scott — an Atlanta native, educator and the 23rd International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, serving from 1990 to 1994. 

A graduate of Spelman College, Dr. Scott was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Kappa Omega Chapter in Atlanta in 1953. Her decades of service eventually led her to the Sorority’s highest leadership position. During her international presidency, her administration expanded the Sorority’s global and educational impact, including establishing an international chapter in London, partnering with the Library of Congress to promote reading, and helping complete an expansion of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international headquarters. 

Her legacy remains deeply connected to Atlanta. Following her passing in 2013, the City of Atlanta renamed Harwell Heights Park Dr. Mary Shy Scott Memorial Park in her honor.
